Size guide
Choosing a size comes down to one thing: how wide the art will be next to what’s around it. Pick your painting’s shape, then tap a size to see it hung at true scale below.

Sizes for this print
Where 12"×16" works
Above furniture 16–18" wide
A desk, shelf or bedside, or as part of a gallery wall. Over a 72" sideboard it covers 17% of the width, so it will look small there; 36"×48" suits it better, or hang a pair.
Shown with Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette by Vincent van Gogh. Every artwork page has this planner for its own sizes.
Know what it’s going over?
Measure the width of the sofa, bed or sideboard, or the stretch of wall you want to fill. We’ll give you the art width to aim for and the sizes that match it.
Over 84" of furniture

Sizing basics
- Width is what matters
- Over a sofa, bed or sideboard, choose art about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture. Art that’s too small is the most common mistake.
- Sizes are the artwork, short side first
- A 24"×36" is 24" by 36" whichever way it hangs, so a landscape painting in that size hangs 36" wide. Frames and canvas depth aren’t included.
- The painting sets the shape
- Every painting is printed in one of six shapes, so you only choose the size. Each artwork page lists the sizes its painting comes in.
Hang any size on a wall to see how big it really is, or enter your furniture’s width and we’ll suggest the sizes that fit.
⅔–¾
of the furniture’s width
Over a sofa, bed or sideboard, aim for art about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide.
57"
from floor to centre
Gallery eye level. Hang the middle of the artwork here on an open wall.
6–10"
above the furniture
Over a sofa or headboard, leave this gap between it and the bottom of the art.

Sizes are the artwork itself, in inches, short side first; a landscape painting hangs with the long side across. On a long wall with no furniture, one large piece or a group works better than a small print on its own. Treat a gallery wall as one piece, with 2–3" between frames.
What the size covers
- Fine art print
- The size of the printed sheet. Popular sizes like 8"×10", 16"×20", 18"×24" and 24"×36" fit standard shop-bought frames.
- Canvas
- The size of the front face. The canvas is 1.5" deep, and the painting wraps around the sides.
- Framed canvas
- The size of the canvas inside the frame. The floating frame sits around it with a slim gap, so it hangs a little larger. Its front face is 0.55" wide, and it stands 1.88" off the wall.
Every size, by shape
Every painting is printed in one of six shapes. Paintings are cropped slightly to the nearest one, never stretched or padded with white bars. Each artwork page lists the sizes for its shape.

Sizing questions
- What size art goes over a sofa or bed?
- Aim for art about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture. Over an 84" three-seat sofa that means 56 to 63" wide, so a 40"×60" landscape. Over a 60" loveseat it means 40 to 45", so a 40"×40" square or a 40"×50" portrait. The calculator above works it out for any width.
- How high should I hang it?
- On an open wall, hang it so the middle of the artwork is 57" from the floor, the height galleries use. Over a sofa, sideboard or headboard, leave 6–10" between the furniture and the bottom of the art instead.
- Which way round are the sizes?
- Sizes are the artwork itself, in inches, short side first. A 30"×60" landscape painting hangs 60" wide and 30" high. The planner above shows each size the way it hangs.
- Does the size include the frame?
- No. For a canvas it's the front face, and the canvas is 1.5" deep. For a framed canvas it's the canvas inside the frame; the floating frame sits around it with a slim gap, so it hangs a little larger. The frame's front face is 0.55" wide, and it stands 1.88" off the wall. For a fine art print it's the printed sheet.
- Can I hang two smaller prints instead of one big one?
- Yes. Treat the pair as one piece: together, with 2–3" between them, they should still be about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture below.
- What if I choose the wrong size?
- Mark the size on your wall with painter's tape first. If it still turns out wrong, our 90-day happiness guarantee covers it: tell us within 90 days and we'll replace it or refund you.
